[Easemakers Podcast E55] Uncovering the principal’s perspective

What are principals really thinking? Tapestry Associates CEO Anne Lyons and President Judy Boerner-Rule share an insider's perspective in this episode of the Easemakers Podcast.

By Kristin Twiford

Anne Lyons and Judy Boerner-Rule can empathize with both principals and the private service professionals who support them. Before founding Tapestry Associates, both of them supported the estates and personal lives of Microsoft co-founders.

Anne spent 9 years at Vulcan Inc., the private family office of Paul G. Allen, directing the development, interior design, construction and maintenance of an international portfolio of lifestyle holdings. Meanwhile, Judy served as the Senior Director of Properties for Watermark Estate Management Services, the private family office of Bill and Melinda Gates.

Working within high profile family offices and talking with peers who worked in similar environments, they noticed a common pattern: family offices needed (and often lacked) someone to focus on the homes, household staff, and personal lives of the principals.

In 2010, Anne founded Tapestry Associates with the goal of bringing the same level of professionalism and care to principals’ personal lives that they were accustomed to in their businesses. Judy joined her a few years later, and today, the Tapestry Associates team serves as trusted advisors focused on non-financial assets like real estate, art, land vehicles, yachts and aircraft.

In this episode of the Easemakers Podcast, Anne and Judy share their aha moments from moving to the other side, as well as the patterns they see across families, family offices, and teams of private service professionals.

  • The stories of how they went from managing the estates of Paul Allen and Bill and Melinda Gates to running their own firm
